About Us...

Welcome to La Honda Mountain Cats and Cavy House Rescue. We are a small, home-based rescue. We rescue cats and guinea pigs from shelters who have run out of time and give them whatever veterinary care, TLC and preparation they need to make them great pets. We place them into loving, forever homes.

Kittens Available!

It's raining kittens and we have 7 kittens available. They are being evaluated and settled in and will be up on our adoption pages soon. All these kittens were in danger at overcrowded municipal shelters. We love kittens but nothing would make us happier than having no kittens to pull from shelters. That would mean every kitten born was born wanted into a loving home. We save all the kitties we can but the only way to really stop euthanasia of healthy cats is by spaying/neutering. Please don't breed or buy while those in shelters die.

Sweet Black Cat Needs A Special Home!

Ray is a pretty 2 year old adult black cat who came to us as a feral kitten 18 months ago. Ray is adapting well to life as an indoor/outdoor cat and is trusting people more and more, although he is primarily a one-person cat. He is very sweet with his foster mom and gets along well with the 2 neutered males who live there and a variety of foster kittens. Black cats already have a much tougher time being adopted and being shy makes it tougher. We are looking for a special home for this sweet cat. Click on the link or email for more information. <Click here to view info about our special cats.

SPECIAL !!

We would really like to see our cats find Forever Homes so we are offering all of our cats for only $95 this month. This is a great deal when you consider it includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations, FeV/FLIV test, and current on heartworm preventative treatments! $95 doesn't nearly cover our expenses though so donations above that are greatly appreciated.

New website devoted to our guinea pigs...

Our guinea pigs now have their own dedicated website. It is still under construction but we are adding new information all the time. Please check it out!:
www.CavyHouse.org Click here to view info about each of the Guinea Pigs

Guinea pig boarding

We do occasionally have room to board guinea pigs. Please feel free to ask if you have a need for guinea pig boarding. Rates are $5/day for one guinea pig. Check with us for longer term boarding rates or rates for more than one guinea pig.

Who We Are

We are a home-based cat and guinea pig rescue who's mission is to find loving homes for cats and guinea pigs who have found themselves homeless. Our cat rescue is not a 501c3 charity, but do none-the-less, lose money on every adoption! Saving One Cat May Not Change the World but It Means the World to that One Cat.

Donations needed

Our guinea pig rescue is part of the Rabbit Haven, which is a 501c3 organization, so all donations made to our guinea pigs through the Rabbit Haven are tax-deductible.

Donations for the guinea pigs are tax-deductible. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the guinea pigs, please send checks payable to "The Rabbit Haven" and note "Cavy House" on the check so it will go to the guinea pigs. Mail to:

Adopting a Friend

If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, please email us and let us know a little about the home you would provide. We can then arrange a meeting" with the animal you're interested in. You would need to fill out a short application so that we can try and make sure that the animal would be a good fit, for both you and the pet. You don't have to own a home to adopt from us but you need to have your landlord's permission. While we haven't yet set an absolute minimum age of children that we will adopt our critters out to, if your child will be allowed to pull an animal's tail, or poke them in the eye or whatever, then for the sake of both the children and the animals we recommend that you wait to adopt an animal until this won't occur. We hope you understand. We support early spay/neuter. Every litter born contributes to overpopulation. Please adopt your next pet from a rescue or shelter.

SPECIAL THANKS to our wonderful vet Dr Janet Lawson at Coastside Veterinary Clinic in La Honda who always has time for our rescue animals even giving up her Sunday off to try to save a very sick kitten.. Thank you Dr Lawson. .
To Gigi Howe for donating many of her beautiful handbeaded bracelets for a fundraiser and for her help and support all year long providing us with our Education Before Vaccination literature. Thank you Gigi.

Our $95 adoption fee (normally $125) for CATS does not even cover the cost of the basic veterinary care we provide the animals. - spay/neuter, vaccinations, health checks , FeLV/FIV checks (cats). One month our food/cat litter bill at the pet food store was over $400! Donations above the basic fee are appreciated.

Below is a comparison of the Adoption Fees we charge and what you might pay (estimates only) if someone "Gave" you a cat.

....................................................$12 - $20........................ Included

TOTAL COSTS ........................$139- $436 ........................ $125

We charge a $25 fee for each guinea pig. This doesn't even cover our expenses. Each male we neuter costs us $40. We feed a couple of heads of romaine lettuce daily to the piggies. Vet bills add more expense. We take in sick and healthy guinea pigs from the shelters and provide veterinary care to bring them back to health. Any donations are very much appreciated and are tax-deductible if made through our parent organization, the Rabbit Haven.
We will not adopt out guinea pigs for breeding. Guinea pigs are social creatures and do better if they have a buddy. For this reason, we would like the guinea pigs to be adopted in pairs, or singly if you already have one of the same sex. We do occasionally have neutered males who can be adopted with a male or female..

We would like to thank Dr. Janet Lawson of Coastside Veterinary Clinic in La Honda www.coastsidevet.com

who has been invaluable to our cat rescue efforts! Also thank you to our generous supporters and wonderful adoptive families. We would also like to thank Dr. Susan Johnson at Santa Clara Pet Hospital, Dr. Nakamura and Dr. Boltz at Adobe Animal Hospital and Dr. Sue Mac Innes for their help with our guinea pigs! Dr. Monica Thompson of Nine Lives Foundation has also provided a lot of support.

We would also like to thank Heather Bechtel of the Rabbit Haven (which our guinea pig rescue is part of) for all of her support. If you're interested in adopting a rabbit, please check out The Rabbit Haven. AVA/The Rabbit Haven

If you don't find the cat or guinea pig you are looking for here, please check other rescue groups or shelters out there. There are many great animals in the shelters that deserve wonderful homes.

And please, spay or neuter your animals - it's the only way to really solve the problem of pet overpopulation.

Directions to our Rescue (Please call Before Coming!)
From Highway 280: Take the Highway 84/ Woodside Rd exit west. Woodside Rd will wind around on the flat a few miles through the town of Woodside. Eventually it will start to climb. You'll climb about 3 miles until you reach the summit. The road you cross at the summit is Highway 35 - Skyline BLvd. Continue straight through the intersection so you are still on Highway 84. Drive down about 6 to 6 1/2 miles until you come into the small town of La Honda. You'll see a volunteer fire station on your right along with a few small stores. On your left, you'll see Applejacks Bar, which is a historic building over 100 years old. Turn left onto the street right before Applejacks Bar. this street in Entrada Rd. (ON the right side of La Honda Rd, it's called Sears Ranch Rd.). Coming up Entrada Rd, turn left onto Cuesta Real - this will be the second street on your left. Cuesta Real is a tiny little street that winds around a lot and the street signs can be confusing. At the first intersection as you come up, stay left onto Cuesta Real. Continue up Cuesta Real - you'll go past Roquena Dr, Canada Vista, Beverly, Sueno Camino, Scenic, Judson and Woodland Vista - until you come to the second house from the end on the right side. We're at 520 Cuesta Real. We have a 2 story brown house with a big green cattle gate. The dogs will proably alert us when you arrive. It's easier to find us during the daylight!

From the Coast: As you're traveling along Highway 1, turn east onto Highway 84 - La Honda Rd. Continue inland roughly 10 miles (I'm not sure of this number). After a while, you'll see a few little businesses on your right and eventually you'll see Applejacks Bar - a historic old building. The street right after Applejacks Bar is Entrada Rd (it's called Sears Ranch Rd on the other side of the road). Turn right onto Entrada Rd.
